There are two types of diaphragm valves: one that seals over a “weir” (saddle) and another that seals over a seat (sometimes referred to as a “full bore or straight-through” valve). Straight-through diaphragm valves are often utilized in on-off applications, while weir-type diaphragm valves are typically employed in control or throttling applications. While diaphragm valves are typically two-port (2/2-way diaphragm valves), they may be three-port (3/2-way diaphragm valves, commonly known as T-valves) or more (so-called block-valves). When more than three ports are incorporated, more than one diaphragm seat is often required; however, special dual actuators may handle multiple ports with a single membrane.
Diaphragm valves can be manual or automated. Automated diaphragm valves may use pneumatic, hydraulic or electric actuators along with accessories such as solenoid valves, limit switches, and positioners.
